Chevrolet’s racing Corvettes were ordered destroyed by GM, and one sold for $18,705,000.
In 1963 Zora Arkus-Duntov built five Corvette Grand Sports to race Carroll Shelby’s Cobras. GM’s board, afraid antitrust regulators would break the company up, ordered the cars destroyed. Duntov handed three to the oil heir John Mecom and hid the other two in a research garage. In 2026 one sold for $18,705,000, the most ever paid for a Corvette.
