Carrier did not invent air conditioning for comfort.
In 1902, Willis Carrier built a system to control humidity inside a Brooklyn printing plant, where damp air made the paper swell and threw the color inks out of line. Cooling people was secondary. The machine existed to hold the plant at 55 percent humidity all year.
