Carlsberg’s founder feuded with his son and left the brewery to science instead.
J.C. Jacobsen left his whole Copenhagen brewery not to his son Carl but to a foundation run by members of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. Its beer money helped open Niels Bohr’s physics institute in 1921, and in 1932 Bohr moved into Jacobsen’s own villa, with free Carlsberg delivered to the door until he died in 1962.
