Carhartt made overalls for railroad men, and other people turned it into streetwear.
Hamilton Carhartt started making bib overalls for railroad workers in Detroit in 1889. A century later rappers and graffiti writers took up the same heavy work clothes. In 1994 the Swiss designer Edwin Faeh, who had brought Carhartt to Europe with his wife Salomée, set up Work in Progress, and that separate company now runs more than 100 Carhartt WIP stores.
