Capcom was saved from bankruptcy by a strip mahjong game it refused to publish.
In the late 1980s, with Capcom near collapse, Yoshiki Okamoto secretly made Mahjong Gakuen. Capcom’s president, Kenzo Tsujimoto, would not put the company’s name on it, so another publisher, Yuga, released it. In 1988 it outsold Capcom’s Ghouls ’n Ghosts, and Okamoto credits it with saving the future maker of Street Fighter II and Resident Evil.
