Cadbury began as a temperance project.
John Cadbury opened a shop selling cocoa and drinking chocolate in Birmingham in 1824 as an alternative to alcohol. A Quaker, he believed drink destroyed working-class families. Chocolate was the substitute. In 2010 the temperance project sold to Kraft for £11.5 billion.
