Bvlgari, the Roman jeweler, was founded by a Greek silversmith, Sotirios Voulgaris.
Sotirios Voulgaris was born in 1857 into a family of Greek silversmiths in Ottoman Epirus. After their shop was burned twice, the family fled to Corfu. In Rome he sold silver to Vatican pilgrims from a stall in St Peter’s Square, and in 1884 he opened a shop on Via Sistina under an Italian form of his name, Bulgari.
