Burger King ran into money trouble before it dropped a word from its own name.
In 1953 Jacksonville, a drive-in opened as Insta-Burger King, named for the Insta-Broiler, a machine that cooked a dozen patties at once. Two Miami franchisees, James McLamore and David Edgerton, bought the failing company in 1959, dropped the Insta, and ran with the two words left over.
