Bugatti’s family swapped two cars built for kings for a pair of refrigerators.
Ettore Bugatti reportedly built the Royale after an English lady compared his cars unfavourably with Rolls-Royces. Twenty-one feet long, it was meant for royalty, but the Depression left three sold, none to a king. In 1950 his daughter L’Ébé let two unsold ones go to the racer Briggs Cunningham for about $571 and two GE refrigerators.
