Broadcom took its name from a chipmaker it bought for $37 billion in 2016.
The buyer was Avago, the old chip division of Hewlett-Packard, which private-equity firms had bought for $2.66 billion in 2005. Broadcom itself had been started by a UCLA professor and his student with $5,000 each.
