Botox is made from the deadliest biological substance known to science.
Botulinum toxin is lethal in trace amounts. In 1978 the ophthalmologist Alan Scott began injecting it to treat crossed eyes. One of the ophthalmologist Jean Carruthers’s patients found her forehead wrinkles gone where the toxin went in, and Carruthers and her husband tested it deliberately. Scott sold the rights in 1991 for about $9 million, before the FDA had approved it for frown lines.
