Blender’s users bought its source code back from the investors who shut it down.
Ton Roosendaal’s company collapsed in March 2002, but only its operating arm went bankrupt. The code sat with a holding company that could still make a deal, and in July its shareholders named a price for releasing everything under an open-source license, forever. He did not have it, so he asked the users, who sent €110,000 in seven weeks.
