Banana Republic sold army surplus with a story attached.
Mel and Patricia Ziegler opened the first store in Mill Valley, California in 1978, selling surplus military clothing. Each item came with a written provenance — where it came from, who wore it. The clothing came second. The Gap acquired it in 1983 and stripped the stories out.
