Balenciaga’s founder learned to sew at his mother’s side in a Basque fishing village.
Cristóbal Balenciaga was born in Getaria in 1895. His mother was a seamstress, and his father, a sailor, died when he was a boy. In his teens the Marquesa de Casa Torres became his first client and sent him to Madrid to train. Christian Dior later called him “the master of us all.”
