Aramco’s name is short for Arabian American Oil Company.
Standard Oil of California began looking for oil in Saudi Arabia in 1933, and in 1944 its company there renamed itself the Arabian American Oil Company. The Saudi government had bought it out by 1980, and the Saudi Arabian Oil Company it created in 1988 kept the name. No one today remembers why the O of Oil was dropped.
