Airbnb began with air mattresses.
In 2007, Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia rented out air mattresses in their San Francisco apartment during a design conference, when nearby hotels were full. The idea sounded too small and too strange. When Airbnb went public in December 2020, in the middle of a pandemic, the company was valued at more than $100 billion.
