Abercrombie once armed explorers headed for the ends of the earth.
Founded in 1892 as an elite Manhattan outfitter, it sold shotguns, fly rods, and tents to the adventuring rich. It outfitted Theodore Roosevelt’s African safari, Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic flight, and Admiral Byrd’s Antarctic expedition. Then the explorer trade died and the brand went bankrupt. In 1988 The Limited bought the name for about $47 million and turned it into a teen-apparel chain.
