7Up was once sold as a “lithiated” soda, with lithia on its label.
Launched in 1929, the lemon-lime soda was sold for most of the 1930s as “Lithiated Lemon Soda,” its label listing lithia citrate, the lithium salt now prescribed as a mood stabilizer. It was pitched as a hangover cure and pick-me-up until federal regulators stopped the health claims in 1936. Whether a real dose was ever in the bottle is still disputed.
