7-Eleven is named after store hours it abandoned in 1963.
The chain began in 1927 as a Dallas ice dock, where an employee, John Jefferson Green, started stocking milk, eggs and bread beside the ice — the first convenience store. The name came from its hours, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. In 1963 an Austin store swamped by a football crowd couldn’t close, and never closed again.
